Happy Homecoming

This piece of artwork was inspired by the many mushers in Alaska who love dogs and not only keep them as pets, but use them for recreation and survival.  It was a big undertaking and took me several months to complete, but I enjoyed every minute of it.  My husband, Dave, helped me by building the sled for my dog team.

The background is an acrylic painting that shows the beauty and wonder of Alaskan winters, where the Northern Lights dance behind the mountains and the stars shine brighter than you can imagine.  The dogs were created using a mixture of Dall sheep and caribou pelts.  I dyed some of the caribou pieces black, but left others natural.  The snow is several pieces of Dall sheep pelt.  The musher's coat was made from a piece of beaver fur.  The trim on the coat is wolf fur.  The boots and mittens are seal fur.  Inside the sled are pieces of beaver, Arctic fox, silver fox and red fox furs.  The artwork was custom framed in a 36" x 21" deep shadow box, wood frame, covered with non-glare glass for protection.
